NOW is a chess program where you play against the CPU. According to the docs, it was a powerful chess program at the time, able to beat most other non-commercial chess algorithms. There does not seem to be a two-player option, so you must play against the CPU. There are also a lot of variables to set but no difficulty selection. The CPU sometimes takes some time to choose its moves, but you can crank up the CPU cycles in DOSBox if you want it to go faster. (By default it's set to a reasonable speed that it would have run back when it was released.)
